China to Research Communication in Africa
• CUC launches new Africa Communication Research Centre
• Aims at reducing challenges of the continent
• Dr. Yanqiu asserts to accomplish the goals

The Africa Communication Research Centre (ACRC) of the China Communication University (CUC) has been officially inaugurated in the Peoples’ Republic of China’s capital Beijing.
The center aims at researching in the field of communication and media development in the continent in a bid to narrow the long existed gap of such studies.
The President of Communication University of China (CUC) Professor Su Zhiwu, together with the Ethiopian ambassador to China Seyum Mesfen unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of the center, the ceremony that was attended by a number of foreign diplomats, media professionals, Chinese goverment officials and prominent scholars in China.
In the welcoming speech, the Vice President Professor Yuan Jun introduced a new plan of promoting communication researches in Africa specifically in the areas of new media and culture, social and communication diplomacy.
“The center targets not only in supporting development initiatives in the mass communication field, but also promoting the cooperation and friendly relationship between China and the whole of Africa that has lasted for decades”, said CUC Vice-president Yuan Jun. He further expressed his belief that significant growth of communication and scientific research about Africa will stimulate the development of the continent.

The Ethiopian ambassador Seyum Mesfen stressed on the need to make the new center a source of discovering and giving recommendations for solutions to the challenges that African continent has been facing for decades.
The Diplomat who was also an official guest lamented that there still exists a one-sided flow of information from the western media leaving the other sides having their issues uncovered.
He insisted on the need for many scientific researches whose results would be published and well translated to reveal the fact about communication development and SINO-African relationship.
The Kenyan ambassador to China Silas Kiragu, applauded the move urging the center to make sure that it fulfill the objectives it has set including researching in areas that would discover more areas of cooperation between China and Africa. He expressed his hope that the center will promote the desire for Africans to enhance peace and tranquility.
He said it is high time for China and Africa to employ its media and research capacity to express themselves in the way they would like to be understood, instead of leaving others doing the job unfavorably by expressing them contrary to their wishes.
South African embassy in China representative at the ceremony, Thembinkosi Gcoyi said the multisectoral relationship between China and African continent has grown immensely within short time and that the new area of academic relations and specifically on research will strengthen the ties.
However, he said many common citizens of the two sides are not fully aware of the existing relations and the truth about the friendly nations. He insisted on the need to tell them the truth by using media, so that they end their negative attitudes against the partner countries and fully engage and cooperate in contributing to the sustainability of the relationship.
In her first speech since she was appointed the first Director of the Centre, Dr. Zhang Yanqiu, who is also a Deputy Dean of ICS pledged to work efficiently in a bid to accomplish the ACRC goals including approval of as many development research projects as possible to discover more areas that China and Africa would cooperatively work on them.
“I will make sure that I do what everyone among you expects me to do”, said Dr. Yanqiu while asserting that the resources allocated for the project would enable accomplishment of the set goals.
Dr. Yanqiu who is also an associate professor and expert in Media Literacy Education is expected to temporarily shun away from her field and turn to the communication research field at a continent that has many challenges that have so far missed permanent solutions due to lack of sufficient and focused research.
In its revealed plan, the ACRC seems to have many strategic goals as compared to other universities that have opened similar research centers in Africa. The goals include establishing partnership with local universities for the sake of getting many researchers who would collaborate on research projects and establishing exchange programs and scholarly visits among partner institutions.
Other areas include researching on cultural communication diplomacy, and other related matters that will build a good image of China while promoting a soft power policy.
The CUC opening of ACRC in Africa also indicates a new China initiative to further strengthening relationships in the academic line instead of limiting itself to economic and political relationship that existed for quite a long time.
From 2011/12 academic year, CUC under the China government scholarship has established a full sponsored special master program of International Communication for students from developing countries. For 2012/2013, most of the students enrolled in the course were from Africa.
China has been also assisting many African countries in promoting media communication projects by supporting them with various facilities and infrastructures that help to improve their media performance.
According to the plan, the Voice of Tanzania Zanzibar (VTZ) and Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) will be among areas of study when the ACRC starts its operations. The VTZ new broadcasting house that was officially launched in 1995 was built by the P.R. China.
China Radio International (CRI) and China Central Television (CCTV) have been broadcasting around the world and many parts of Africa have been enjoying their services.
