Interantional Master of International Communication - IMIC program overview

Communication University of China (CUC) is one of the key universities of “Project 211” of China. Founded in 1954, CUC has been dedicated to the education of competent professionals in the media industry. It is honored as “the cradle of the nation’s broadcasting and television talents”.


According to the latest National Discipline Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education, Journalism and Communication Studies, and Theatre, Film and Television Studies at CUC ranked No.1 in China; Art Theory Studies and Design Studies respectively ranked No.6 and No.10. Within its advantageous fields of teaching and research, CUC offers English-taught Master’s Programs that are designed for international students with diverse backgrounds and experiences.


Since fall semester of 2011, CUC has been offering International Master of International Communication (IMIC) Program. This one-year program is designed for students from developing countries with diverse backgrounds, and integrates theoretical courses with practical fieldwork. The language of instruction, examination and thesis writing is English. Since fall semester of 2014, IMIC Program is divided into International Communication Class and Engineering in Digital Media and Networking Class to provide more focused training to professionals in related fields.


I Program Description

International Communication Class

Objectives: 1. To systematically study rules of international communication and its influence upon national sovereignty from global and local perspectives; 2. To investigate rational and feasible strategies of international communication in developing countries under the context of globalization; 3. To develop comprehensive intercultural skills and the capacity to work as a media practitioner, administrator and policy maker.


Emphasis is laid upon applying multidisciplinary perspectives and methodologies to further understand the basic feature of international communication and its social and historical origin, and to investigate the implementation and effects of international communication policies. Theoretical studies will be combined with fieldwork, policy study projects, internship, and related extra-curricular activities (e.g. media apprentice).


Students graduated from this program will be capable of efficient global communication practice and critical thinking on current policy based upon their understanding of global communication system.


Program Duration: Students are expected to complete the program within one academic year. The academic year starts around the second week of September and ends at July of the following year consists of Fall Semester, Winter Break and Spring Semester.


Language: The language of teaching and thesis writing is English.


Course Requirements: The minimum course requirement is 32 credits, including 3 core courses of 15 credits, optional courses of 12 credits, and education practicum and field work of 5 credits.

Education Practicum and Field Work(5 credits): Students are expected to attend various academic activity including industrial investigation, field trip and other academic activities concerning thesis research.


Master’s Thesis: Towards the end of the first semester, teaching school and institution will invite related faculty members as potential thesis advisors for students. Thesis is expected to closely relate to international communication and to address practical issues of the developing world. Students must pass oral defense of their thesis.


Degree Requirements: Students are required to fulfill course requirement, finish thesis writing and defense by the end of one school year. With the approval of University Degree Committee, the degree of Master of Arts will be awarded to students in International Communication Class, and the degree of Master of Engineering will be awarded to students in Engineering in Digital Media and Networking Class.


Engineering in Digital Media and Networking Class

Objectives: 1. To master basic theories and specialized knowledge in engineering, as well as problem-solving capability with advanced method and modern technology as emphasized by this program; 2. To develop comprehensive skill set to independently undertake tasks in engineering technology or engineering management as senior level engineer or manager.


Emphasis is laid upon integrating theories and knowledge of Communication and Information System, Signal and Information Processing, as well as Computer Science and Technology. Study will be combined with fieldwork utilizing advantageous resources of CUC.


Students graduated from this program will gain solid knowledge in Digital Media and Networking, and capability to conduct interdisciplinary scientific research.

II Admission Criteria

Applicants should be governmental officials at middle or senior level, professionals in media and communication industry, or researchers or administrators of academic institutions at middle or senior career level. They should be under 45 years of age and in good health. They should hold Bachelor’s Degree and have at least 3 years of relevant working experience.


Applicants for Engineering in Digital Media and Networking Class should hold Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering.

For applicants whose native language is not English, English proficiency should be sufficient to enable graduate level studies and thesis writing. TOEFL or IELTS test score should be submitted if possible.


III Application Time and Procedures

Complete the Application Form for International Master of International Communication, Communication University of China. Follow the instruction on the Application Form to prepare for other application materials. Submit a complete set of application materials to School of International Education, CUC, through the assessment and recommendation made by the Economic and Commercial Counselor’s Office of People’s Republic of China in the applicant’s home country. Application materials will be due on June 30th


IV Admission and Registration

Admission Letters will be issued on July 20th. Registration date will be in early September. Exact date will be confirmed by Letter of Admission.


V Scholarship and Accommodations

 Students are provided with round-trip flight to Beijing (CUC will arrange airport pick-up), one-time relocation fee of 1500 CNY and monthly stipend of 2000 CNY. Students do not need to pay for tuition fee.


 Each student is provided free of charge a single room in international students’ dormitory with private bathroom, television, telephone, air conditioner, and public laundry machines, microwave ovens and electric stoves. The room is for the usage of the student only. Student’s family and friends cannot stay at student dormitory.


 Students may use canteens on campus with prepaid meal cards.
